The settlement of Schwarzenbach-Burg was discovered in the 1920s. It is located east of Schwarzenbach on the top of a small hill which is connected to the surrounding hills by a rather narrow ridge. The late Iron Age settlement was the main object of interest at the beginning.

The primeval settlement was heavily fortified during the late Iron Age. A rampart still visible today, at some parts up to 7 meters high, surrounded an early Celtic city in the second and first century b.c. The Oberpullendorfer Bucht is in close proximity to Schwarzenbach. It was a centre of iron production the, so-called Ferrum Noricum, during prehistory. This proximity emphasizes the importance of this settlement, which would make it a so called Oppidum, an early city.
